Why do I prefer to read the book if a movie is made after? It is an often repeated discussion in my life. The reason is simple and beautifully put by George R.R. Martin:
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. A man who never reads lives only one. A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone if it is to keep its edge.”
What is a book

When I open a book, I feel like a child in front of a wonderful world. I am anxious and curious, and I am scared, the feelings are overwhelming. Every book invites you into a world of words. However, the secret of books is something else. When I open a book, my imagination comes to life. I live loves and disappointments, I fight dragons and criminals, and I save princesses and kingdoms, cities and worlds. Books are endless worlds for me.
Reading is an imagination exercise. Everyone’s brain creates images for each word it receives. Based on where we are in our lives and on the experiences that we have, these images change. The images created by the brain, again and again, form the imagination. Seeing the practice makes perfection, the more we stimulate the brain through words, the more our imagination becomes a larger and more complex realm.

What is a movie

On the other hand, a movie is a way to visualize the imagination of another person. A movie based on a book represents the interpretation given by one person. Actually, we are spectators to the journey taken by that person while reading the book.
Unele calatorii sunt mai mult decat ne-am imaginat vreodata, altele nu chiar. Some movies enhance the value of the books, while others can lower it.
Have you ever asked yourselves how the dragons from Game of Thrones, would look in your imagination? How does Gerhardt’s(“The Witcher”) voice sound, or what the makeover of the England royal court was during Bridgerton’s life?
Like the books, the movies are a form of art. They are rated good or bad, they are blockbusters or likable to a small group of people. The movies create visual moments, they influence generations, and they pinpoint unique moments through the technologies and the visual effects used.
The book…the book has no technology and no visual effects. The book smells like ink and paper. The book remains the silent friend on the corner shelf. The book does not become obsolete through tech evolution. The book gains value in time, just like a good wine.

Book vs movie

Why do I prefer to read the book if a movie is made after? Because I have never read a book without learning something new. I have always closed a book with the sadness of losing a good friend and with the joy of finalizing a good experience.
Personally, even though I love movies, mostly TV shows, the books have offered me epic loves, surreal powers, tears, and dreams. The movies have offered me moments in time, smiles, and a sense of transiency.
Just like George R.R. Martin ” I have lived a thousand lives and I’ve loved a thousand loves. I’ve walked on distant worlds and seen the end of time. Because I read.”
