Brilliant. The Execution? Ehhh&#8230; pass the wine.   <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Phantasma<\/em><\/strong> by <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3G9hMz3\">Kylie Smith<\/a> is what happens when a killer concept meets&#8230; a half-hearted execution with a dark aesthetic filter slapped on top. Kylie Smith had all the ingredients of a gothic masterpiece: cursed castle? Check. Demonic overlords with shady agendas? Check. An anxious heroine with OCD and a glitter-sister straight out of a Disney sing-along? Double check.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And let\u2019s not lie\u2014the cover is a seductive little witch that convinced me this was going to be a &#8220;cozy autumn read with tea, candles, and emotional trauma.&#8221; But fate (thanks, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/fable.co\/club\/books-banter-with-graces-book-nook-370678821322\">Books&amp;Banter book club<\/a><\/em>) picked Phantasma for June. So here I am, Kindle in hand, sweating aesthetics while walking through ghostly New Orleans illusions. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udda4 Ophelia: OCD, demons, and hot boy problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ophelia is raised by a strict, dead-inside mother, trained to become a necromancer (as one does), and haunted by OCD\u2014a condition that, in this book, takes the form of a literal character: Shadow Voice. Think inner critic meets demon roommate who doesn\u2019t pay rent but sure has a lot of opinions.<br>This voice seems to be inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/rachelgillig.com\/\">Rachel Gillig<\/a>\u2019s Elspeth and Nightmare dynamic from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/One-Dark-Window-Rachel-Gillig-ebook\/dp\/B09DCKSR8V?crid=1ZICGID2L421N&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.oh2RnitVAp-w4v3tOwqPYE62oKzX6lAhHbMnqzoH3g4YWA4Q5g6iX3NDja-jlzrNVbEYvotXBsmB23lbOzuoAOpJMfpJBO07BrihK6HdCuZhgV7C3eC8jNwq6wyfW7dbn09EkuoqmMkwjjyFcPfJ2-EjbqRYzNOJwXJgumuPt5uiO1mQnfbJhP4D5csgAIvdPkdltAt9Shy_qYlGotq_633KpXO2GFjyVrYdMPPfq60.Sp_DztIdOALZ-2jSg_cEIiqWgIpxiRATSC5-Ofl7sJc&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=one+dark+window+rachel+gillig&amp;qid=1751039451&amp;s=digital-text&amp;sprefix=one+dark%2Cdigital-text%2C366&amp;sr=1-1&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=whimsicalwh04-20&amp;linkId=84ebf73bd6196fe4c0f21bbd8eeb2d52&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl\">One Dark Window<\/a>, except\u2026 not as haunting, not as clever, and definitely not as emotionally charged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genevieve, her sister, is the sunshine to Ophelia\u2019s storm: bubbly, sparkly, and down to play the deadly game of Phantasma like it\u2019s the Hunger Games, but make it ballroom goth. Naturally, Ophelia follows to \u201csave her.\u201d Sure, babe. Sure.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then comes <em>the mysterious stranger<\/em>, of course &#8211; did you have any other expectations? &#8211; with a line plucked from the heart of Gothic poetry, and suspense takes residence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>&#8220;A heart and a key would set me free,&#8221; it said. &#8220;But you should hope we do not meet again, angel.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OK, Dracula!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd6f\ufe0f Phantasma: Caraval meets <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3GmnVb9\">Hunger Games<\/a> meets&#8230; Chaos in the wardrobe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phantasma is a deadly competition inside a shape-shifting, illusion-filled castle ruled by devils. Survive nine levels and get a wish. But first? You must pay with your biggest fear, which then boomerangs back to haunt you during the game. Concept? Genius. Execution? Insert nervous laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enter Blackwell, a ghost-boy with emotional depth and mysterious scars. He helps Ophelia through the game, and\u2014surprise!\u2014he\u2019s actually <em>the devil prince himself with amnesia<\/em>. Because why not throw everything into the plot blender? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd25 Slow-burn romance or&#8230; slow emotional whiplash?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blackwell is a chef\u2019s kiss. A soft Jax (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/40g0bMP\">Caraval<\/a><\/em> fans, you know), deeply wounded but noble, with lines that make you want to tattoo his words on your soul:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>\u201cIn a different life, in a fair one, I would\u2019ve kept you until my eternal soul withered away to dust.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swooning? Same. But Ophelia? She\u2019s emotionally unavailable, flirtatiously indecisive, and constantly stuck between \u201cyes,\u201d \u201cno,\u201d and \u201cmaybe if there\u2019s no better offer.\u201d Reading her romantic dilemma feels like watching someone spend two hours choosing between an \u00e9clair and a slice of cake\u2014just pick one, woman.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udde0 OCD rep: smart idea, messy follow-through<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having OCD portrayed in a fantasy setting? Yes, please. Having it as a literal voice constantly undermining Ophelia? Double yes. <em>But<\/em> then&#8230; it just kind of fizzles. Instead of showing a girl battling her mental illness, we get someone who treats her intrusive thoughts like <em>her emotional support demon<\/em>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Lowlight<\/em>: At one point, Shadow Voice convinces her that Blackwell is probably having sex with a random demon lady, and asks her to knock on the bed\u2019s headboard&#8230; because, well, compulsions. Well, it is the first time that Ophelia is shown refusing to listen to the compulsion. Nothing changes, Blackwell\u2019s off living his best cursed life, and Ophelia is just left to realise that life goes on planet Earth and inside Phantasma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iconic? No. Confusing? Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc9c What I loved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The mental health angle\u2014<\/strong>intent gets points, even if execution stumbles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That cover<\/strong>. It lied to me, seduced me, and betrayed me. I respect the hustle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Blackwell. <\/strong>Boyfriend material with bite, depth, and actual emotions. He deserves better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cYou don\u2019t need to fix yourself. You\u2019re not broken. It\u2019s giving d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu, not originality.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Historical inconsistency<\/strong>: It&#8217;s all corsets and parasols&#8230; until Ophelia throws out a sexy \u201c<strong><em>Now, beg<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d Girl, are you in a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Ii7v44\">Jane Austen<\/a> cosplay or a Wattpad smutfic?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Genevieve who?<\/strong> She was the reason Ophelia entered the game, and then she vanishes like a side character in an NPC side quest.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfaf Whimsical Whispers Verdict<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phantasma by Kylie Smith is a book with a breathtaking premise wrapped in a gothic aesthetic, but it stumbles when it matters most: character development, emotional weight, and originality. It\u2019s an easy beach read or a chill summer night escape, but <em>don\u2019t expect it to destroy your soul\u2014or even dent it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2b50\ufe0f 2.5 stars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the potential. For Blackwell. For the OCD concept. And yes, again\u2026 for that damn gorgeous cover.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udccc<strong> Read it<\/strong> if you want a gothic adventure with a sprinkle of dark romance and chaotic vibes. <em>Caraval meets Disney on Prozac.<\/em><br>\ud83d\udeab <strong>Skip it <\/strong>if you crave psychological depth, actual plot originality, or a heroine who can make up her mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcac Let\u2019s talk feelings, not spoilers!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you read it?
